Topic: Sharing the Wealth: Democratization and Information Technology
Information technology can help to engage ordinary citizens in
ways that were not possible only a short time ago. It can also augment individuals' capabilities to allow more productive interactive experiences. Dr. Hepting will discuss some of his current work on local food mapping, facial identification, and fractal generation. He will also discuss the new facilities in the Regina Integrative Cognitive Experimentation (RICE) lab as a resource for the community.
Presenter: Daryl H. Hepting, Ph.D.
Daryl Hepting is a member of the Department of Computer Science and an associate member of the Department of Media Production and Studies at the University of Regina. He completed his Ph.D. at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, Canada in 1999 with the dissertation entitled "A New Paradigm for Exploration in Computer-Aided Visualization." His research is focused on the development of tools to help people deal with and navigate omplex
information spaces, in application areas as diverse as environmental decision support, eyewitness identification, and multimedia composition. He serves as coordinator of the Farming and Local Food Production group within the RCE (Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development) Saskatchewan. He has worked on Benoit Mandlebrot's Fractals project at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Centre and Yale University. His computer-generated fractals have been published widely.
