Description
Mosaic presents the 52nd Annual Sports Celebrity Dinner being held Friday, February 3, 2012. As you know, each year our non-profit organization hosts this gala dinner featuring some of North America's leading sports speakers. This year, we are bringing Mark Messier and Bryan Trottier to our beautiful city. All proceeds from this event are distributed back into the community to meet both our mandate and our motto:

Serving the Community's Greatest Need

Mark Messier

Mark Messier (“Mess”) has been involved in professional hockey sine 1979 as a player and now executive. Mark was signed at the age of 17 to play with the Indianapolis Racers of the WHA and then moved to the Cincinnati Stingers. After the WHA folded, Messier was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the 3rd round of the 1979 draft. Mark was not initially known as a scorer, but his offensive numbers increased steadily and in 1982 he registered his only 50 goal season as a left winger. Moved to centre in the 1984 playoffs, Messier’s play sparked the Oilers to their first Stanley Cup with Mess earning the Conn Smythe trophy as playoff MVP. The Oilers ended the New York Islanders era of dominance and became the next dynasty team in the NHL for the 2nd half...

The Oilers ended the New York Islanders era of dominance and became the next dynasty team in the NHL for the 2nd half of the 1980’s.

With Mess and Wayne Gretzky proving leadership the high-scoring Oilers proceeded to win 4 Stanley Cups in 5 years before Gretzky was traded away in 1988. Mess became Captain of the Oilers following Gretzky’s departure in 1990 and became a more dominant player, winning the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP and the Oilers won the Stanley Cup for the 5th time. After the 1991 season, the Oilers ownership was crumbling and continued to trade away key members of the team for salary reasons and Messier asked to be traded.

Mess was traded to the New York Rangers prior to the 1991 season and won the Hart Trophy for the 2nd time leading the Rangers to the best record in the regular season. Playoff success eluded the Rangers until the 1994 season when the Rangers finished 1st overall in the regular season and won the Stanley Cup in thrilling fashion. Mess guaranteed victory in Game 6 of the conference finals vs. the New Jersey Devils and backed it up with a hat trick in the game. Mess scored the Cup winning goal in Game 7 over Vancouver giving the Rangers the first Stanley Cup in 54 years. Mess is one of the few hockey players to seiz the media spotlight in New York City with the Rangers being the most high profile team in the city during this era. Mess is the only player to captain two different teams to the Stanley Cup and is considered by many to be one of the greatest leaders ever in professional sports.

After the 1994 season, Messier and the Rangers continued to have success in the regular season, however playoff success eluded them even with Gretzky joining the team for the 1997 season. Messier signed as a free agent with the Vancouver Canucks for the 1998 season. The years in Vancouver were not kind to Messier, as the team missed the playoffs for the 3 years and he left the club after the 2000 season.

Mess returned to the Rangers for the 2001-2004 seasons. Mess achieved numerous personal milestones during this period, including passing Gordie Howe into 2nd place, behind Gretzky, in all-time scoring with 1,887 points and finishing 2nd all-time with 1,756 games played. Mess was the last player to play in the NHL who entered the league in the 1970’s as well as the last WHA alumnus to play in the NHL.

Mess is also known for his extensive accomplishments in international hockey. He played for Canada in the 1984, 1987 and 1991 Canada Cups, the 1996 World Cup and 1987 Rendez-Vous series.

Messier, Kevin Lowe and Glenn Anderson won 6 Stanley Cups in total, tied with Bryan Trottier and Red Kelly as the most won by a non-Montreal Canadien player. He played in 15 NHL All-Star games. In 1998, the Hockey News ranked Mess number 12 on its list of greatest players. Messier was inducted in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007. Both the Oilers and Rangers have retired Messier’s #11 jersey.

Messier is currently a special assistant to the Rangers president Glen Sather.

Bryan Trottier

Bryan Trottier (“Trots”) The pride of Val Marie, Saskatchewan, Bryan played 18 seasons in the NHL for the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins winning a non-Hab record 6 Stanley Cups as a player. Bryan also won a 7th Stanley Cup as an assistant coach with the Colorado Avalanche in 2001.

Bryan played minor hockey in Climax, SK and junior hockey with the Swift Current/Lethbridge Broncos of the WCHL. He was drafted 22nd overall by the New York Islanders in the 1974 NHL Entry Draft. Trots set a then rookie record with 95 points for the Islanders in the 1975-76 season and was awarded the Calder Trophy as top rookie player in the NHL. His best offensive season was in 1978-79 when registered 134 points and he won the Art Ross trophy as top scorer and the Hart trophy as league MVP.

Trots was one of the core players on the Islanders dynasty teams of the 1980’s winning 4 consecutive Stanley Cups from 1980-83. Much of the core of the Islanders team had ties to Western Canada including Trottier, Clark Gillies, Bob Bourne, He won the 1980 Conn Smythe trophy as playoff MVP in 1980. Trots scored 50 goals in 1981-82, a career high and was considered the top forward in hockey in the early 80’s by combining scoring touch, physical play as well as defensive ability.

Trots centred the Trio Grande line with fellow stars Clark Gillies and Mike Bossy. Trottier and Bossy were known for their dynamic on-ice partnership for many years with the Islanders as well as at the 1981 Canada Cup. Trottier played for Team USA at the 1984 Canada Cup, to pay back the country where he lived and he wife was born. Trottier also assumed a leadership role as NHLPA President from 1984-1992.

With the Islanders turning over a number of veteran players, Trottier joined the Pittsburgh Penguins as a free agent in 1990 won 2 Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. Trottier played one more season for the Penguins and retired after the 1994 season.

Following retirement, Trottier served as an assistant coach with the Penguins from 1994-1997, and then joined the Colorado Avalanche as an assistant coach. He was named head coach of the New York Rangers in 2002 for half a season. In June 2006, Bryan was named Executive Director of Player Development for the New York Islanders.

Trots was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997. Trots was ranked 30th in the Hockey News 1998 list of 100 Greatest Hockey Players. He is currently ranked 15th in regular season points and 9th in playoff points as well as the Islanders all-time leader in assists and points. The Islanders retired his #19 jersey in 2001.
